Miners in Peru speeding up Copper output to seize better prices

Dec 16 Mining companies in Peru, a leading copper exporter, are accelerating their production of copper to take advantage of better prices for the red metal, the finance minister said in broadcast comments on Friday. Copper production in Peru surged 38 percent year-on-year in October largely on the back of rising output from MMG Ltd’s year-old mine Las Bambas and Freeport-McMoRan Inc’s recently-expanded Cerro Verde mine. “What we’re seeing is that many miners are … Continue reading

No more burning Batteries? Stanford scientists turn to AI to create safer Lithium-ion batteries

Scientists have spent decades searching for a safe alternative to the flammable liquid electrolytes used in lithium-ion batteries. Now Stanford University researchers have identified nearly two-dozen solid electrolytes that could someday replace the volatile liquids used in smartphones, laptops and other electronic devices. The results, based on techniques adapted from artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, are published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science. (See video here.) “Electrolytes shuttle lithium ions back and … Continue reading

Tesla’s Evolving Cobalt Nightmare

Tesla cannot launch a $35,000 Model 3 without a Gigafactory that’s operating at or near its design capacity of 35 GWh per year. That will require about 7,800 tonnes of #Cobalt per year. Tesla doesn’t have a cobalt supply chain that can take almost 10% of global cobalt production away from the companies that are presently using the metal. Ref: http://nanthavictor.com
