Le Gouvernement du Burundi a signé ce lundi deux conventions de recherche du nickel et du vanadium avec la société Chemical Vapor Metal Refining Corporation (CVMR®) basée à Toronto au Canada.

La première concerne le Nickel à Waga-Nyabikere en province Gitega, tandis que la deuxième concerne le vanadium à Mukanda dans la même province. Le ministre Côme Manirakiza a précisé que la société CMVR est une société internationale expérimentée en matière de recherche et d’exploitation de minerais, et qu’elle a une société sœur de droit burundais. Les deux sociétés vont exploiter les deux sites qui renferment des minerais de nickel, de cobalt, de fer, de cuivre, de vanadium et de titanium.

M. Kamran a indiqué à la presse, à l’occasion de cette signature, que sa société a promis au gouvernement burundais de bien faire ce travail de façon à générer au moins 1500 emplois dans les zones d’exploitation. Il a précisé qu’il s’agit d’une recherche de faisabilité et que dès qu’elle sera terminée, le raffinage se fera au Burundi. Les études démarreront avec janvier 2018 et dureront à peu près une année, selon la même source.

Par ailleurs, un communiqué de presse du ministère burundais de l’Énergie et des Mines, souligne que le site de Waga-Nyabikere s’étend sur une superficie de 218 km² et contient des réserves estimées à 1,088 million de tonnes métriques de nickel, 25,2 millions de tonnes métriques de fer, 30.000 tonnes métriques de cobalt et 17.800 tonnes métriques de cuivre avec une valeur estimée à 30 milliards $.

Celui de Mukanda s’étend sur 144 km². En termes de vanadium, il contient des réserves prouvées de 6,5 millions de tonnes métriques, 7,3 millions de tonnes métriques probables et 5 millions de tonnes métriques possibles. Il contient également des réserves de fer de 2,6 millions de tonnes métriques et 67.000 tonnes métriques de réserves de nickel. La valeur du vanadium contenu dans les réserves confirmées est estimée à 600 millions $, précise le communiqué.
